CT Black and Brown Student Union Offers Statement in Response to School Shootings, Calls for Action to Ensure Safe Schools for Our Children

HARTFORD, CT [March 29, 2023] - Six individuals, including three children, were killed in a school shooting that took place in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday.

In response, Shineika Fareus, Organizing Director with the CT BBSU and Community First Coalition has shared the following statement:

“Students deserve to go to school and know they’re safe. Parents deserve to send their children to school and know they will come home that day.

“As a society we have been continually failing our children, because we cannot agree on the necessary steps to address the gun violence epidemic. Common sense gun control policies should be a clear first step, yet too many across our state and country have decided they would rather treat our children as expendable than deal with minor inconveniences.

“We must throw away any and all systems that allow our students to be harmed in their places of learning. That includes both external threats as well as systems of excessive punishment that cause our students to feel unsafe on a daily basis.

“Our students deserve policies that protect them and they’re relying on the adults in positions of power to make those tough but necessary decisions. We have to make the right decisions for our youth.”
